Czwarta edycja Barciowiska za nami (1)
The event was organized by the Augustów Forest District with the participation of Bractwo Bartne. BARCIOWISKO is a one-day event combining the idea of environmental education drawing the society’s attention to issues connected with the role and importance of bees in people’s lives, popularisation and local promotion of tree beekeeping as well as a practical construction of log hives.
The event was opened by the forest district deputy manager, Wojciech Szostak, who welcomed all guests. Then, he gave the floor to Adam Sieńko who talked about the rules and course of the competition. After the official presentation of teams and drawing of log hives, participants started their challenge at 10 am.
Preparing log hives is one of the elements of the bee rescuing programme run by foresters. The practical construction of log hives was organized as a competition for the best log hive. This year, 10 teams participated, including two foreign ones. Teams were as follows:
- Augustów Forest District: Adam Kolator, Adam Korzeniecki
- Augustów Forest District: Mirosław Mróz, Zbigniew Wysocki
- Rajgród Forest District: Krzysztof Mroziewski, Janusz Jankowski
- Beekeepers from Augustów: Alfred Judycki, Mariusz Milanowski
- Beekeepers from the Częstochowa area: Wojciech Kluźniak, Sebastian Ojrzyński
- Bractwo Bartne: Karol Wrona, Dawid Otowski
- Zielona Barć association: Jakub Respondek, Ariel Bardorz
- Niepołomice Forest District: Łukasz Wielocha, Mateusz Wielocha
- Italian-German team: Antonio Gurliaccio, Florian Kuttner
- Polish-Italian team: Bartłomiej Stankiewicz, Luciano Fanelli.
Each team received tools to prepare log hives and when working, they could use parameters of a log hive model.
In addition, this year numerous spectators attending the event could also try their hand at building log hives. Those willing to do it could come and try building a log hive using the provided tools. Such a solution was a great success as there were very many people who wanted to do it.
The next part of the event was a tree climbing competition with the use of leziwo (a climbing tool) which was organized by Bractwo Bartne. There were four adventurers who took part in it. Leziwo is a tree beekeeping tool used for climbing a tree. Climbing and using this tool require a lot of skills and agility.
Efforts of tree beekeeping teams preparing log hives were evaluated by the jury consisting of:
- Wojciech Szostak, Augustów Forest District Deputy Manager,
- Adam Sieńko, Secretary of the Augustów Forest District,
- Zbigniew Kołtowski, Vice-President of the Polish Beekeeping Association,
- Mirosław Karolczuk, Deputy Mayor of Augustów.
As every year, there were some attractions for the youngest - an educational stand with games and art workshop. Educational activities for children and teenagers aimed at explaining the role of bees in the human life and the environment as well as raising social awareness of the need to actively protect native bee species and stop biological imbalance and degradation of ecosystems.
The workshop during which everyone could make bees on their own from waste materials (Kinder Surprise packaging, toilet paper rolls, paper trays) turned out to be a huge hit. All children could also build their own happiness trees. Game participants received small gifts and gadgets with the logo of Barciowisko and the State Forests, including, among other things: eco bags, wooden bookmarks, t-shirts and magnets. During the workshop, participants could browse and get publications connected with traditional beekeeping and the Augustów Forest District.
There was a honey tasting event, whereas selected products could be bought from local producers. During the competition, it was possible to see a photography exhibition on tree beekeeping titled “Last Tree Beekeepers” by Prof Krzysztof Hejke.
The log hive competition started at 10 am and finished at 1 pm. After that time, the jury started their evaluation. The first place in the competition to replicate a log hive as closely as possible was shared by the following teams:
- Augustów Forest District (Adam Kolator, Adam Korzeniecki)
- Italian-German team (Antonio Gurliaccio, Florian Kuttner)
- Rajgród Forest District (Janusz Jankowski, Krzysztof Mroziewski)
The remaining teams shared the second place. The distinction was awarded to a team consisting of the representatives of “Leśna Droga” from Toruń and Kurpie shooters. The winner of the tree climbing competition was Tomasz Bielski.
It is worth emphasising that the goal of all BARCIOWISKO’s efforts is to promote the protection of wild bees and learn how to make a log hive on your own. A very practical result was the completion of eleven log hives which, after being installed in various parts of Poland, will help many swarms of bees survive.
